But first, stick your hand out and pat YOURSELVES on the back, as active members of the BLUE DIAMOND COMMUNITY, the LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY, the CYCLING COMMUNITY, and all other patrons of RED ROCK CANYON devoted enough to follow this issue and take a stand. Your continual support to the endless emails, meetings, phone calls, and letters, is what drives this issue so effectively to the public eye. Stay posted and keep those good letters and testimonies coming. And thanks, especially to those of you who responded to the most recent call for your public testimonies. It takes a lot of dedication to spend your morning at the state building, but it works! Together we can move mountains (or at least make them safer:)
Thank you for your good work on behalf of SB 240 and the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. We agree that this is a national and state treasure worth protecting and appreciate what you have done to better the experience for everyone to enjoy.
Sincerely,
Zane Marshall is the cyclist who approached the senate with this issue. Senator Shirley Breeden is the senator who responded with Senate Bill 240 and saw it all the way to law. Bobbie McCollum is her assistant. Susan Martinovich is the Deputy Director at NDOT who helped create the 50 mph solution. Mary Martini is the Southern Nevada District Engineer who comes to the public meetings, initiated the safety charettes, and follows through with the safety improvements. Erin Breen is the UNLV public safety consultant, and Minta Albietz is the widow of the respected officer, our beloved friend and neighbor, Don Albietz, who's life became the driving inspiration behind this cause. Her courage impacted everyone at the hearings.
Also, these additional legislators helped by co-sponsoring the bill, (but their emails are not in use between sessions), and every member of both the senate and the house voted unanimously in favor of this bill!

THE #1 PUBLIC REQUEST from the Red Rock Canyon safety charettes...
THE NEW STATE LAW as signed by the Governor...
ON JULY 1st WE WELCOME A NEW SAFETY SPEED ZONE FOR RED ROCK CANYON!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RED ROCK CANYON
SAFETY SPEED ZONE CELEBRATION
July 8, 2009, 10:00 a.m.
Red Rock Overlook on SR 159
And please take a moment to thank those who were instrumental in getting this passed.
(see article above for their names & emails.)
Brief background: In 1995, the speed limit in Red Rock Canyon was raised from 45 to 60 miles per hour, making it the fastest scenic byway in the country and more than doubling the injury and death rate* for the following and subsequent years. Then further development closed in on both ends of Red Rock Canyon, compounding the problem. Since then, the public has been working with elected officials and government agencies on multiple levels to try to improve the situation. A difficult, but forward-moving campaign, saveredrock.com details this multi-faceted, continuing approach to increased safety in our national conservation area. Most recently, state lawmakers and the Nevada Department of Transportation have created a new state law providing a 50 mph speed limit more condusive to the scenic byway's unique conditions, and satisfying the number one public request* to lower it from 60.

The governor signed SB 240 into Law!

Supporters of Red Rock Canyon have waited a long time for this. The number one public response vetted from years of public campaigning and NDOT safety meetings is about to be satisfied with the posting of new 50 mph signs along Red Rock Canyon's National Scenic Byway (SR 159). Thanks to Senator Shirley Breeden for Sponsoring the Bill, Zane Marshall for introducing it to her, NDOT for providing solutions, the public for testifying, and the state legislators for voting in unanimous approval, one of our newest Nevada State Laws is further proof that Red Rock Canyon is a highly valued state and national treasure.
Everyone is invited to NDOT's Safety Speed Zone Celebration (July 8, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at the Red Rock Canyon Overlook turnout at SR 159's mile marker 9.8.) RSVP Bob Mckenzie, NDOT PIO (702) 385-6504.
