Major Projects:
The Major Projects Team reviews projects within master-planned communities of a specific size. Typically, Major Projects consist of projects of 700 acres or more within the urban area and 300 acres or more in outlying areas within unincorporated Clark County. Specific code requirements are outlined in Clark County Code 30.20.

Major project developments go through an intensive public process, ending with the negotiation of a development agreement, to ensure that impacts related to that particular development, such as roads, parks, schools, public safety, and other infrastructure needs are addressed.

Major Projects Title 30.20

2006-2009

Over 110 accidents occurred on the small stretch of road bisecting our state treasure, Red Rock Canyon, the three years preceding the law to lower the speed limit in Red Rock Canyon (2006-2009).  Seven people lost their lives in those accidents, and 58 were injured.  A fact which led lawmakers to vote yes when the public brought it to their attention via Shirley Breeden's Senate Bill 240.

The first year the speed limit was raised:

  • 1 human, 2 wild horses, and 22 burros were killed

The following facts are from the Nevada Highway Patrol. They do not include the

  • four additional human deaths
  • 14 burros killed and
  • 2 more cyclists hit on 159 since Don Albietz, (hit and run victim, July 20, 2005).

The Red Rock Casino on 215/Charleston (north entrance of Red Rock)

  • The Red Rock Casino expects to attract approximately 2009 trips (1071 vehicles entering the site and 938 vehicles exiting the site) in the morning "peak hour" (i.e., the one-hour period in the morning when traffic is at its heaviest - typically falls sometime between 7-9 AM). It expects to attract 2750 trips (1057 vehicles entering the site and 1693 vehicles exiting the site) during the evening peak hour (which falls sometime between 4-6 PM).

Large Semi Trucks

  • The Gypsum plant has closed its mining operations but not its production. It now imports its oar from other states. This constitutes a recent addition of 50 double and triple trailer semi trucks twice a day on SR 159.
  • Other semi trucks such as "Albertsons", "Sysco" and the scrap metal-hauler that hit Don are now using Red Rock to avoid conditions on SR 160.
