Dear friends of Red Rock Canyon,
Thank you for signing the petition.  (It is still available to sign on-line if you haven't signed it yet.)
This is a very important reminder about the most crucial zoning hearing for Red Rock Canyon, tomorrow, Wednesday, April 21!
Please come to the Red Rock Rally and hearing tomorrow!  Or if you can't make it, please write to your commissioners.  Click on the read more (below) for maps, directions and emails.  It's not looking good:
We have met with every commissioner and haven't gotten any commitments either way, but it's not looking good.  The DA's office is asking them to settle.  But we aren't giving up!  They need to know what they are doing to Red Rock and how many people valley wide and nation-wide it could affect if they allow this in Red Rock Canyon.  Jim Rhodes' company has been lobbying hard.  We have been working hard, too, but we don't have the funds he has.  His company, Gypsum Resources hired a Political Action Committee to do a different "Save Red Rock" petition that urges the County Commissioners to Approve a lawsuit settlement, which would remove the rural character protections from the top of the mountain in front of the visitor's center (across 159) and give the property owner the right to apply for a major project and increased density/intensity.  In exchange, Gypsum will not take the county to court and they will not risk losing a million dollars in court fees.  We argue that it would cost the county much more than a million dollars in the long run to support the services and infrastructure that Gypsum would have to build to get a development up there.  They say that we risk losing 43,000 acres to development in Red Rock Canyon if it goes to court and is found unconstitutional.  When actually the only thing that would happen, is that only about 5000 acres (most of it owned by Gypsum) would be affected.  And the only affect they would have is that without the Red Rock Overlay, those acres would be left with the rural zoning restrictions they started out with anyway.  We believe that the community-driven 10 year effort to protect and defend the scenic and rural nature of Red Rock Canyon is worth defending.  It contains a year's worth of county staff and citizens' research and development about what is conducive to maintaining a rural and scenic environment.  Punching a hole in the middle of it changes everything.  If you would like to learn more about it, you can find it in the papers as well as seven years' worth of history on this issue on the website www.saveredrock.com.
Please do whatever you can to come to the rally and hearing!
RED ROCK RALLY 10:00 a.m.
Show the news media and the county commissioners you care.
Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 10:00 a.m.
at the Clark County Government Center (Map)
We will have a few signs, but feel free to bring your own.  Here's an idea.
A homemade poster board that says:
SAY NO! DO NOT SETTLE!
DEFEND RURAL RED ROCK
FOR EVERYONE!
(insert your name or your group/team name here)
RED ROCK ZONING ITEM HEARING
(probably sometime after *10:00 a.m. in the Commission Chambers)
Clark County Government Center
Agenda item numbers 31 and 35
*The zoning meeting starts at 9:00, but our agenda item is last on the list, so our sources say that the item probably will not be heard until after 10:00 sometime.  So, you can come and go into the meeting at 9:00 when it starts or come to the Rally at 10:00, then go into the meeting afterwards.  We will have someone on the inside letting us know when it's getting close for our item to be heard.  If it takes too long and you need to leave, you can put your name on a notification list at the rally and we will text, email, or phone you with plenty of notice to come back later.
LETTERS
If you can't make it, you can still write letters to your commissioners, asking them to stand strong and maintain the rural integrity of the canyon.  In the subject line write:
Say No to the Red Rock Amendment and Settlement! (ORD 0210-10 and AG-0376-10)
Steve Sisolak
Tom Collins
Larry Brown
Lawrence Weekly
Chris Giunchigliani
Susan Brager
Rory Reid, Chairman
See you tomorrow and thanks for all your support for Red Rock Canyon!
