SAVING RED ROCK CANYON

Commissioner Susan Brager's proposal to trade Federal land for private in-holding in Red Rock Canyon is good news (RJ, 1/19/2013, p. 3B).  the Canyon is a priceless National treasure and it would be a shame to see 4700 homes, a business park, and retail areas in the middle of such a marvelous gift of nature.

We all have an important part to play in protecting the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.  A Federal trade has been suggested in the past and, while Mr. Rhodes has been amenable to the idea, our Federal representatives have not.  The Bureau of Land Management has taken the position that the private land has been scarred by mining and is not worthy of inclusion in the Conservation Area.  Our elected Federal officials have refused to engage in a trade.  It is up to us to convince our leaders that the Canyon is worth saving as a National resource.

new dawn

I am very excited (or at least cautiously optimistic) to be writing of a positive development in the battle to save Red Rock.  This Tuesday, January 22, 2013, the Clark County Commissioners are going to vote whether or not to:

  • "sign a resolution supporting efforts to exchange the Gypsum Mine Property on Blue Diamond Hill for federal land." full resolution

This today from the Las Vegas Review Journal:

  • "Developer Jim Rhodes' plan to build a 2,000-acre neighborhood overlooking the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area could soon be no more.
  • Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager is spearheading an effort to encourage the federal government to allow Rhodes to swap his land with a different, less controversial, piece of federal property...." full article

Lifetime Fitness Yoga Instructor, Kerry Treichel (200h RYT), is generously donating her time to teach yoga on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m. and has asked that all proceeds go to help save Red Rock.

She is very experienced and offers a specific approach for athletes, focusing on hip flexors, flexibility, and balance to open up the otherwise forward position held during most biking, running, hiking, and climbing workouts.

The class is hosted at Las Vegas Cyclery on Town Center and 215 (10575 Discovery Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89135).  Email  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or text 702-429-7619 to reserve.

It seems ironic that the Nevada "Division of Environmental Protection" would issue a permit without considering the public's (hundreds of) requests to do an evironmental study first.  Here is the report from NDEP about the most recent meeting and permit issuance.  Funny how many people thought that the environment on public land next to a national conservation area was worth considering first and NDEP didn't.

There was a great turn out at last night's meeting and the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection received a lot of comments on-line as well.  ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )  At the meeting, NDEP gave an educational presentation about their permitting process then opened it up to questions and comments.

While passion ran high as it always does for Red Rock Canyon, the objections were not pointed to mining or reclamation on private lands as much as it was for lack of permit accountability on private lands and new activity on public lands.

At this wonderful time of peace and giving, here are some fun and easy ways you can give back to Red Rock Canyon...

ideas: join SRR facebook group, join Yoga for Red Rock, donate, or attend meeting.

This is the email newsletter that went out on December 16.  You can click on it to read.  The newsletters are not very frequent, so if you haven't signed up for email updates yet, you may do it here without any worry of gettting too much email. I get so much myself, that I only send out newsletters on important occasions.

This was important because of the NDEP permit meeting (article below).

STATE SUPREME COURT CASE

Written by Heather Fisher

Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Nevada Supreme Court heard the appeal in the Gypsum Resources V. Masto case that could be the solution to this entire atrocity of trying to put nonconforming high density development in the precious rural area of Red Rock Canyon.  Save Red Rock was there to hear the proceedings.

The choice before the judges:
Was the law (SB 358) made by the people to protect Red Rock, unconstitutional because it did not apply to every county in the state, and/or it singled out one person?  Or is the "value" of Red Rock unique and compelling and broad enough to warrant "deference" and protection?
