Thanks to everyone who participated in the super successful Red Rock Rally!  The canyon received overwhelming support that day, both at LIFETIME Fitness and throughout the canyon as runners and riders rode for Red Rock on the scenic byway in question.  This Wednesday's vote is what it's all about.  You can go to the meeting at the county building or you can email your vote (click below).  Attendance was high and supportive at both the rally and community input meeting in which Commission Chair, Susan Brager, committed to denying both waivers, but we still need a majority vote among commissioners, so you can come to the meeting on Wednesday or do the QUICK ONE CLICK method:

On February 8, 2012, seven county commissioners will decide the fate of the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Byway. Will it become the next construction traffic highway for Southern Nevada?  Will the mess and debris of commercial construction trucks penetrate our sacred canyon, and clog it up with debris, noise, dust, and pollution?  *And for the second waiver, will commissioners grant this developer a special favor by helping him with his BLM processes to expedite the process and save him millions in land use fees and rents?

Photo from the last time Red Rock was used as a construction traffic highway, when Mountain's Edge was being developed in 2004.  A construction truck hauling cement to/from the development went down near the scenic overlook.  A time of relentless noise and congestion.

The good news is, several of the commissioners are against waiving these two protections for Red Rock.  Commissioner Brager created the conditions and stands behind them.  But the developer's lawyers are still at it.  Rhodes' lawyer Chris Kempfer agreed to these conditions at the last hearing so he could get the votes he wanted, and now he is asking Commissioners to waive them!  Commissioner Brager said she knows that these two conditions she added to protect Red Rock were fair.  She held a public comment meeting for everyone to voice their concerns.  Hundreds of concerned citizens attended that meeting and hundreds more came to the Rally to Save Red Rock.  Susan Brager said that although anyone is welcome to come to the county commission meeting, her position is firm, so not to worry.  They would rather not sit through another 6 hours of passionate testimony because they already know how everyone feels.  They'll just try to keep the meeting short.  If you can't make it to the meeting, Emails are another way to voice your opinion. We hope most of the Commissioners will stand up for Red Rock this time and vote no on both waivers.  To those commissioners, we say, thank you! and to the rest, we ask to, VOTE NO ON BOTH WAIVERS!

Dear Commissioner,

Red Rock Canyon was not made to accommodate construction traffic and the impacts of urban density development.  The legal land use is rural with no construction traffic access on the scenic byway. Please do not change this. Please VOTE NO ON BOTH WAIVERS:

Background Info.:

Save Red Rock.com has fought hard to represent the public and protect Red Rock Canyon for the past ten years.  We have won some very significant battles for Red Rock including getting bike lanes built on the scenic byway, lowering the speed limit, rerouting commercial trucking away from Red Rock, and creating the Red Rock Overlay for responsible (appropriate rural-only) development.  Now that will all be RUINED if we drop the ball and don't pay attention to this next battle.  This one is a fight to keep high density CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC OUT OF RED ROCK!

On January 18, Clark County Commissioners are being asked by a developer to go back on their agreement and grant him these two waivers:

  1. waiver 1: would allow the developer to use the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Byway (159) for construction traffic on a proposed high-density 20-30 year project
  2. waiver 2: would do a favor for the developer by making the county take over some of his responsibilities and let him first submit his plan and help him with his get right of way across BLM.  The county requires that he cannot present his plan until he first obtains proper Rights of Way from BLM, but if he gets this waiver, the county (we as tax payers) would have to help pay for it.

We believe, along with Commissioner Brager who made these conditions to protect Red Rock in the first place, that these are good and reasonable conditions that SHOULD NOT BE WAIVED, especially in such a sensitive area as Red Rock.  But this developer just won't stop pestering all of the County Commissioners, and we don't know yet how some of the other commissioners will vote.

Nobody's asking to take any rights away from anyone, we're just fighting for fair play.  We don't believe that any one developer should get special favors from the county.  We don't believe that Red Rock should be sacrificed.  We just believe that he like any property owner, should stay within his property rights and build what he bought: a nice rural one house per two acres, tucked away only on land he owns.  But, believe it or not, the concept plan he put forth to the commissioners, does not only show high density development for which he is not zoned, but also adds nearly a thousand acres of high density buildouts on PUBLIC land he does not own, that he wants to swap from the public!

It's utterly ridiculous, but the good news is, some of the commissioners want to protect Red Rock for the public and have said they would vote no to the waivers.  We just need to get the majority of them to agree.

So, let's party!  If you can't come but want to help, you may visit www.saveredrock.com for on-line t-shirt sales and donation information.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Last Wednesday's meeting was good.  Commissioner Brager got to hear from many points of view about why there should not be construction traffic in Red Rock and why the taxpayer's should not have to pay for the county to do a favor for the developer with the BLM.  The hall was packed and the community was grateful to have her come do this meeting that wasn't required, just so she could hear from her constituents. And most of all, they are grateful that she shares their concerns and commits to voting no on both waivers.

At the same time, Save Red Rock received a lot of concerned letters from people who were not in the district and wanted to know what they could do.

The big problem is that this is not just a District F issue, but has been portrayed publicly as such in the past.  This issue impacts millions of visitors to Red Rock Canyon every year.

Save Red Rock just formed a non-profit corporation for the sole purpose of preserving the Red Rock Canyon experience and better facilitating the message with more public outreach.  Unfortunately our January 7 fun run and ride had to be canceled, but we are working on something that we think will be even bigger.  We'll let you know what that is as soon as we can confirm that and also when we can get t-shirt sales on-line.

In the meantime, have a great holiday season and try to get out to Red Rock before it's ruined...Just kidding!  Working together, we will never let that happen!

Enjoy the warmth, peace, and reason for the season with your loved ones.

TURNING THE TIDES Print E-mail

WHO BENEFITS FROM 44,000 EXTRA CAR TRIPS AND CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC IN RED ROCK ANYWAY?

Dear friends of Red Rock Canyon,

Thank you for your support.  I wanted to remind or inform you of 3 Red Rock events:

  1. Commissioner Susan Brager hosting local constituent meeting, Dec 14
  2. Red Rock Resolution Ride and Run, Jan 7
  3. County Commission hearing and vote, Jan 18

Since the last county meeting when the commissioners approved the (concept only) of high density development in Red Rock Canyon, people have been very upset and asking what they can do about it.  The developer would like everyone to think that this is a done deal, but that is far from true and there are actually some good opportunities coming up which we believe can turn the tides for Red Rock:

(one in Blue Diamond and two in Las Vegas):

1) Constituent Meeting Dec. 14: Commissioner Susan Brager is hosting a community meeting to hear from her constituents regarding the two waivers that the developer wants to get so he can run his construction traffic through Red Rock and skip a few steps in the process.  Save Red Rock says:

  • THANK YOU FOR THE CONSTITUENT MEETING!
  • NO WAIVERS!
  • NO CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC IN RED ROCK!
  • THANK YOU FOR REQUIRING DUE DILIGENCE WITH BLM!
  • PLEASE DON'T GIVE IN!
  • Blue Diamond Community Center
  • 6:00 p.m. (note time change from last email), Wednesday, December 14, 2011
  • 9 Village Way, Blue Diamond, NV 89004
  • Red Rock t-shirts and bumper stickers for sale

2)  EVENT was on the 7th, NOW on the 14th

Las Vegas to Red Rock Biking & Running Event, Jan 14

  • RED ROCKIN' RESOLUTION RIDE & RUN
  • Lifetime Athletic Center to Red Rock Canyon and back
  • Saturday, January 7, 2012, 10:00 a.m-3:00 p.m.
  • Run Distances: 5k and half marathon
  • Bike Distances: (beg.) ride to Calico Basin and back, (int.) ride to Blue Diamond Hwy and back
  • Finish Line rally party (open to everyone, even if you don't run or ride) and media event:  Rockin' live bands, resolution party, Red Rock T-shirts, TV/news, lunch ticket for yummy Lifetime Cafe, free schwag bags, indoor/outdoor luxury cabana-style venue, and more!
  • Registration opens Friday, December 16, on the Save Red Rock website

3) Clark County Commission Meeting, Jan 18: THE NEXT BIG DECISION: Will Clark County Commissioners back down on their conditions?

  • Clark County Commission Chambers
  • Wednesday, January 18, 2012
  • 9:00 a.m. Government Center
  • 555 Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89155

It seems as if the message we all got last time was that the developer won his battle for Red Rock.  He may have won that battle, but at a big cost.  First of all, it was only a concept; he still does not have a zone change.  (To get a zone change, he would have to prove that he deserves special treatment.)   Additionally, the developer's lawyer told the commissioners at the last hearing that in order to get the concept plan passed, he would accept their condition to keep construction traffic off of the scenic byway.  Now that he has his concept approved, he wants to renege on that part!

Our message never changes.  We stand together and say, NO WAIVERS!  Red Rock is not your construction highway! Rural (what you bought) only!  High density does not belong in Red Rock!  Red Rock is not for sale!  Fair Play!  You don't deserve anything more than anybody else!

Sure, Mr. Developer, you can ask for a zone change or anything else you'd like, just like the rest of us can.  But just because you or any of us ask, doesn't mean that it's appropriate for the Red Rock, or that county commissioners have to make an exception just for you!

At Save Red Rock, after standing strong for so many years, we're finally starting to see a shift in climate.  It's taking a concerted effort, but together we can turn the tides for Red Rock.

As always, thank you so much for your concern for Red Rock Canyon!

Did you know?

Over 110 accidents occurred on the small stretch of road bisecting our state treasure, Red Rock Canyon, the three years preceding the law to lower the speed limit in Red Rock Canyon (2005-2008/09).  Seven people lost their lives in those accidents, and 58 were injured.  A fact which led lawmakers to vote yes when the public brought it to their attention via Shirley Breeden's Senate Bill 240.
